Sweltering

Locked Posts

I've started writing reviews for the bath and body products I have tried out because it felt good to contribute my opinion on popular products.  It is also an exercise in descriptive language as I'm terrible at composing a story or storytelling in general.  All of my personal posts are locked, but if (for some unfathomable reason) you would like to see my posts, please leave a comment and add me to your f-list.  I usually friend everybody back.
Thanks!

Birthday Candles - Make A Wish

Happy Birthday to Me!

...well, it was actually yesterday, but whatever. Too tired to really say much, but it was interesting to say the least...I think my thesis will eat me alive.

Pretty - Painted Eggs

Yeah meterological phenomenons...

I could not believe my eyes earlier today when I saw a *double* rainbow spread across Arlington.  It was so gorgeous and I wish I had a camera with me.  I haven't experienced joy and wonder like that in some time...it was like hope spread across the sky for everyone to see.

Brushing - Monsters

Spring cleaning...

Finally!  Finally I manage to pare down the mess in my apartment to a manageable level.  Papers are filed and organized - things are placed on shelves - I CAN SEE MY FLOOR!!! and it is mostly cleaned/vacuumed.  I finished hanging picture frames in my entry way and have frames ready for my bedroom.  Seriously, there is something about un-cluttering that does good things to the soul.

Yay, clean apartment!

New Villainess Reviews

Brook Stant, owner and soapmaker of Villainess, provides a variety of bath and body products from handmade soaps, sugar scrubs, and lotions to 'swag' items like soap dishes, poufs, and gift packs.

Reviews:

Autumn Gala (Soap Box Co. Exclusive)
Scent: Fresh-pressed apples, spiced cider, sweetgrass, and fall’s new-mown hay harvest.

Review: This is the cider scented soap I was looking for - very light on the spices with a hint of hay and grassy notes.  I enjoyed the sweet, sharp smell that remains on your skin.  It's one of those soaps that fully blooms in a steamy shower.  My only wish is that the over all fragrance would be a tad stronger.

Rating: :D :D :D :D

Frostbite (Winter 06/07)
Scent: Jasmine and lily of the valley frozen with fir and green apple. An incisive bite of citrus, and a chilling wooden core.
Keen Feature: Snowy smattering of ivory kaolin clay.

Review: My feelings for Frostbite were similar to those of Jade - I *really* loved the description, but I can't stand the soap fragrance.  Again, I get the smell of strong chemicals and detergents and nothing of the fresh, winter fragrance I expect.  Something about the mix of citrus with floral scents make certain Villainess soaps smell just awful to me.  I have to give kudos for the look of the bar with the creamy whiteness contrasting with the lovely cobalt blue swirls.

:P

Indiscreet (Discontinued?)
Scent: A shameless blend of cheeky citrus notes - sweet orange, pink grapefruit, lemon, line - saved from an altogether fruity fate by flirty white neroli blossoms and a bubbly splash of champanged.

Review: So I've finally figured out a trend when it comes to certain Villainess soaps - soaps featuring mixes of citrus and floral scents smell like chemicals and handsoap to me.  Again, the gorgeously drafted fragrance description on V's part makes me swoon over this soap, but my nose is not equipped to appreciate it.

:P

Jai Mahal (Winter 07)
Scent: A lesser palace infused with the sweet scent of victory. 4 rich vanillas and tonka, Mysore sandalwood, bourbon and coconut. Expensive woods, incense and imported spices - cedar, amber, myrrh, cardamom and nutmeg.
Keen Feature: A smattering of spices for texture.

Review: Dear god, I have never had vanilla like this before.  I bow before the great and awesome skill of Brooke Stant for creating this fragrance.  The mixture of spice, amber!, coconut, and sandalwood with the four vanillas makes me happy in ways that are magical and uplifting.  The foodie in me really digs the sweet, spiced scent of this soap.

Rating:
:D :D :D :D :D!

Just Desserts (Late Winter 07)
Scent: Blood oranges dripping over a warm, resinous vanilla, wrapped in a dry peel of orange zest.
Keen Feature: Assorted cubes of well-cured soaps.

Review: *laughs*  I really expected this soap to be a really, sexy scent like Trauma, but I should have looked more closely at the name.  I was truly taken by surprise by how much this soap reminds me of an orange creamsicle.  Very foodie and though perhaps a tad too sweet for me, I can see why V customers really love this soap.

Rating:
:D :D :D

Mojito (Ivy Keep Exclusive)
Scent: Dripping juicy limes and aloof sophisticated mints. A classic cocktail with a dry touch of booze.
Keen Feature: It has glitter mixed in.

Review:  I must have received a really old sample, because this soap smelled pretty chemical to me.  I didn't get any mint fragrance nor booze - just the artificial smell of limes.  My soap sample had already browned with age, so I can't really say anything pertinent to the look of the soap nor can I say that I saw any glittery bits.

Rating:
:P

Trauma (Winter 07)
Scent: Ripe peaches dripping with dragon’s blood, against a sweet skin-scent of Egyptian musk, amber and myrrh.

Review: So damn sexy, it would throw me off the catwalk to strut it's stuff.  The peaches really come out over a bed of eastern spices.  I have no idea what dragon's blood smells like, but it must help in making this soap fragrance absolutely divine.  I swear, this is the only trauma I want in my life.  The pink micas help add a feminine touch to this bruised looking soap.

Bath Time!

Magic Hands Workshop Reviews

Jackie McDade, owner, soapmaker, and massage therapist for the Magic Hands Workshop, provides a veritable cornucopia of handmade goods - soaps, body polishes, lip balm, bath bombs, etc.  Being a new customer to Magic Hands, I had written a long email to Jackie asking about her various products and what would be suitable for my tastes.  She promptly responded with an abundance of information and insight as well provided me with numerous samples of her soaps.  Now that is great service!

I noticed Magic Hands because how beautiful the soaps are with their gorgeous colors and micas as well as the Magic Hands logo stamped on each bar of soap.

Reviews:

Ambre de Nepal
Scent: Warm, rich and sexy, this scent is beloved by men and women alike.
Keen Feature:
Each beautiful bar is dusted with gold mica and stamped in gold, for an enhanced feeling of luxury.

Review: I can not tell you how much I love this soap.  It has become my signature scent, it's so gorgeously crafted and smells absolutely divine.  Seriously, the quickest way to my heart is give me amber anything.  Some amber scents can be overwhelming, but there is something very delicate and sophisticated in the fragrance.
Rating: :D :D :D :D :D

Energy
Scent: A fresh, tart fruit blend.
Keen Feature:  Silk fibers are added for a rich, luxurious lather.

Review: A very bright and cheerful scent, but it does toe the line towards cheap handwashing soap.  It lathers brilliantly and looks like sunrise in a bar, so it gets points for being pretty and functional.

Rating: :D :D :D

Hawaiian Sandalwood
Scent: This soap has an earthy, seductive aroma, with just a touch of sweetness. Exquisite and romantic.
Keen Feature:
A touch of kaolin clay, a gentle white China clay, to make it a great shaving bar, as well as swirls of cocoa powder.

Review:  The bar I received was rather white and I assume the swirls of cocoa powder is a new thing.  This soap is another winner in my book.  Sandalwood can be rather sharp to the nose when used alone, but there is a definite sweetness in the bar that takes the edge off the sandalwood.   I bought a sandalwood body polish from MHW which pairs beautifully with this soap.  I haven't tried shaving with this bar, but I'm sure it will be an enjoyable experience.
Rating: :D :D :D :D

Honey Oatmeal
Scent: As above.
Keen Feature: A soothing, moisturizing soap for dry, irritated skin, with added honey for emollient properties. This soap is formulated with even more olive oil and shea butter than our other recipes, and a healthy helping of cocoa butter as well. The finely ground oatmeal smooths and soothes as you wash.

Review:  This winter has been rather harsh on my skin to the point I had go out and buy the biggest  humidifier I could find.  This soap has been a godsend - it soothed and moisturized and took gentle care of the rough patches on my elbows and knees.  This soap will be another staple in my soap hoard.

Jasmine Spice
Scent: A sweet and spicy bottom half paired with a romantic jasmine layer, topped with decorative cloves.
Keen Feature: Buttermilk!

Review: An interesting combination of sweet floral and strong spice making for an enjoyable holiday scent.  The fragrance really comes out in the shower and it's fun to use each layer separately.  I find myself partial to the spicy layer - maybe I could ask for two bottom half next time. XD
Rating:
:D :D :D :D

Mulled Cider (Limited Edition for Fall)
Scent: Tart, strong cider with notes of cinnamon, clove, allspice, and orange peel.

Review: Eh...I really wanted to like this soap as I am partial to cider and apple scents and the mixture of red and white really brings the holidays to mind.  It sadly smells like potpourri and I just can't stand it.  There might be too many strong fragrances what with all the spices and tart cider.  Alas.
Rating: :P

Passionfruit Rose
Scent: Tart tropical passionfruit, with romantic rose. Sophisticated, feminine, modern, and floral without being overpoweringly perfumey.

Review: This is one of the most beautiful bars of soap I have seen.  The color combination of pinks and white make me smile every time I use this soap.  This is my one ultra feminine soap and it makes me feel very girly and gentle when I use it.  The rose scent is very strong in this soap and I only wish that there was more passionfruit to temper it.
Rating:  :D :D :D :D

Winter Grapefruit
Scent: One of the cleanest, freshest scents around - tart grapefruit, refreshing juniper, sharp lemon, and undertones of pine.

Review: Er...not really something I can appreciate with all the sharp and pungent scents.  The grapefruit doesn't do enough to sweeten or temper the other fragrances.  I agree that it's one of those wake you up scents, but it's not the kind of wake up I would really want.

Villainess Soap Reviews

Brook Stant, owner and soapmaker of Villainess, provides a variety of bath and body products from handmade soaps, sugar scrubs, and lotions to 'swag' items like soap dishes, poufs, and gift packs.

Reviews:

Belle (Summer 06)
Scent: Succulent Georgia peach, thick with clotted cream and a dark touch of clove.

Review:  Managed to grab one of the last bars Soap Box had - I *really* wanted a peach scented soap. I was surprised by how light and spicy the scent was when I first unwrapped my bar. I find that the peach fragrance comes out in the shower.  As this soap had been discontinued for some time, I might have received a rather old bar of soap which may contribute to the disturbing brown color of the soap.
Rating: :D :D :D

Friction (Catalog Constant)
Scent: Deeply peppered woodsmoke over a layer of creme.
Keen Feature: Abrasive white pumice throughout.

Review: Love!!! The bar is incredibly heavy with pumice and while it's not the same thing as a pumice stone, it does work on my callouses over time. It's a little scratchy for my elbows and knees, but it does a good job. The scent of the soap is just so soothing and light.
Rating: :D :D :D :D :D

Jade (Catalog Constant)
Scent: Sparkling citrus, galbanum and bergamot, with a substantial heart of jasmine, cyclamen and roses, peaches and berries. A very earthy denoument of olibanum, patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood and rich dark musk.

Review: I desperately wanted to like this bar.  The scent description and the look of the bar is just so lovely and I did a little dance when my soap package came in the mail.  I was all smiles until I smelled it - it reminded me of gas station bathroom soap.  It was just that gross. I even tried it a few time in the shower just to see if water makes it smell better.  Alas, no.  Maybe there are too many scents going on or maybe I received a bad bar, I can't explain it.
Rating: :P

Proserpina (Soap Box Company Exclusive)
Scent: Exsanguinated fruits – currants, cranberries, figs, and the infamous pomegranate – with a somber breath of earth and the sharp grief of patchouli.
Keen Feature: Light sprinkling of pomegranate seeds in the soap bar.

Review: This soap is so perfectly named.  Proserpina being the Roman goddess (her Greek equivalent being Persephone) of springtime and rebirth.  She was tricked by Pluto (Hades) in becoming his queen by eating the seeds of the pomegranate fruit.  Wiki explains her story better here.  Utterly fresh and springlike, this soap has become a staple in my hoard of soap goods. The bar is simply gorgeous to look at with pink mica and the embedded pomegranate seeds.  I have to pop out the seeds before soaping up as they tend to scratch a little.
Rating: :D :D :D :D :D

Quick or Dead (Summer 07)
Scent: Sarsaparilla and sweetgrass, worn saddle leather, tobacco smoke and the remains of a spicy lime cologne.

Review:
There was something in the description of leather, sweetgrass, and lime that made me desperately want a bar of this soap. It's proven to be a fun treat for me - truly unique when compared to all the other scents I've tried. I would liken the smell of it to an armed damsel in the wild west - tough and sweet.  The bar does have very dusty, distinct look, but the generic brown of it is a little boring.

Yum - Bath Ice Cream

Superbad Soap Reviews

Haven't tried anything from them yet, but I like the lace wrapper packaging and egg shaped soaps.

Coming Reviews:

Bad Influence (Soap Box Co. Exclusive)
Scent: Creamy coconut swirled with ripe black currants.
Keen Feature: Coconut flakes mixed-in.

Review: The overall fragrance is much stronger than most soaps I have already tried which I really dig.  Love the mixture of currants and coconut fragrances - it's so hard to find a good coconut scent blend.  The only negative is the coconut flakes, which are meant to provide a scrubby texture to the soap, are cut way too long causing the soap to break apart much faster than it should.
Rating: :D :D :D :D
